So do you, like many others, have a long list of resolutions going like;
I WILL START STUDYING EXTENSIVELY FROM TOMORROW!!!,
I WILL EXERCISE DAILY AND LOSE 10KG OF WEIGHT!
Or on some highly motivating day(new year most probably) you decided you'll be doing something BIG. But you never even actually started it! Or you couldn’t go far enough and are waiting for the next new year for another list of resolutions.
We all relate to such instances more often than not, don’t we? But end up only wondering why we can’t do something about it. What is it that stopped me from getting what I once wanted so badly, good shape, good grades etc. Maybe it was just too ambitious, or became unmotivating at some time. Idk! Well, Atomic Habits by James Clear may provide a good antidote. The book essentially tries to focus on the importance of an atomic habit; a minor habit which may seem too minute today, but will do wonders when done regularly. Suppose the goal is to lose 10 kg, the idea is to start by just 10 pushups daily and take it to 100 gradually. It is a guide on how to break a goal into small and actionable steps and inculcating small parts of it in our daily habits. It says ‘Build a system for getting just 1% better every day’. We all are in a spurt on achieving great things but little do we realize it’s not an overnight process. Growth is to nurture it by repeating the same thing daily for days, months, even years. And thus its four step model is a good guide to do just that.
Its four step model says: make it obvious( make a specific plan), make it attractive( do what you need to do before what you want to do), make it easy, make it satisfying.
However, a remarkable feature of the book was its realistic approach. It does not claim to make you a superhuman able to do anything and everything. But it emphasizes on finding what comes naturally to you before you start putting your efforts. After all, it will be a lot easier for you to do something in a field where your interest lies. Another laudable feature is the narrative style and real life illustrations which makes one relate to the author’s ideas. So before you start making another todo list and fall into the loop, go through the book so you may actually do something BIG this time.
